thinking out loud

WWW Wednesdays (December 20th)

What are you currently reading?

I’m reading two books right now – one of them is Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor, which I am reading and listening to at the same time. The other is Leia: Princess of Alderaan by Claudia Gray, which I’m reading in ebook format. Both are hard to put down, so it’s difficult for me to switch from one to the other! Right now I’m mostly reading Strange the Dreamer at home, and Princess of Alderaan when I’m out. I love Laini Taylor’s Lazlo, who is unsurprisingly relatable to me – most of my D&D characters were clerics of Ioun, working as archivists or librarians.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Shin Mashiba’s Yokai Rental Shop Vol. 1. I’m still not sure how I feel about it. I’ve always been drawn towards folklore and mythology, and love reading manga and books about yokai. This one draws from the folklore but is focused on the horror (although it isn’t that scary), and the stories in this volume are more about how humans try to use them to grant their wishes, and how these wishes backfire on them. So it’s more like xxxHolic lite than a story focusing on yokai. It’s a fun read, though!

What do you think you’ll read next?

I’m interested in trying another manga – Forbidden Scrollery Vol. 1 by ZUN & Moe Harukawa. It’s a Touhou Project manga, based on the Touhou characters/lore I presume, although I’m not that familiar with Touhou (other than the fact that it includes a character named Marisa who spells her name the same way I do, both in romaji and kanji – an old classmate told me this!) I’m interested in this manga, because BOOKS. This story has a girl with the power of translating books, who lives in a library, and is a bibliophile (of course she is). So yes, I need to read this.

And I still haven’t read An Enchantment of Ravens, which I said I’d read “next” last week. I’m quite determined to read that, as well as Angie Thomas’  The Hate U Give, before the year ends.
