KinoKL’s YAwesome Fest 2018

Last year, I started a kind of YA Fest for our store in July, in which every Saturday will have at least one YA-related event at the store. This year, I decided to open it up to middle grade as well, although our events are definitely still YA-centric.

These are what we’re doing in July at Kinokuniya Kuala Lumpur:

July 2nd – July 8th
All Children’s Fiction (Middle Grade) are 20% off*

July 7th
10:30 am Maurene Goo Skype Q&A
2:00 pm Tails of Ae’tann Book Launch

July 9th – July 15th
All YA Contemporaries are 20% off*

July 14th
10:30 am Julie Murphy Skype Q&A
12:00 pm Hanna Alkaf talk and Q&A
3:00 pm Percy Jackson Trivia Contest

July 16th – July 22nd
All YA SF titles are 20% off*

July 21st
10:30 am Gloria Chao Skype Q&A
3:00 pm Kinokuniya SF/F Book Club **

July 23rd – July 29th
All YA Fantasy titles are 20% off*

July 28th
2:30 pm HP 20th Anniversary Celebration

* with the purchase of another item of any value
** this book club is for non-YA SF/F, but July’s book club pick is Seanan McGuire’s Every Heart A Doorway which is pretty YA

We will be giving away lots of ARCs and other items at each event! I’m tired just thinking of July, now XD

  1. You always manage to get such great authors for your Skype Q&As, do you go through any particular channels to organise them? And is the time difference ever an issue?

Hope your Julyfest is going well so far — the end is in sight!

    1. Usually I talk to the publisher’s or distributor’s (depending on the author) marketing department. It takes some planning beforehand to see whether the authors agree with it and what timing works best for a Skype. It’s not easy with the time difference (our Skypes with authors in the US have to be early in the morning our time, and it’s difficult for a lot of fans to make it, so our crowd isn’t as big as it could be, for one) but we just have to make it work as best as we could!

      1. Another question (sorry! I’m in the process of setting up a YA book club) — do you know how much you generally pay the authors/publishers for the Skype interviews?

    2. The publishers/distributors usually deal with that, although when we do these events we order more of the author’s books (and backlist) in return, so we help the publishers/distributors in that sense. I wish you luck with your book club!
