thinking out loud

WWW Wednesday (Sept. 26th)

What are you currently reading?

I’m listening to Kiersten White’s And I Darken (read by Fiona Hardingham), which is the first book in The Conqueror’s Saga. I’m mainly starting on this because earlier this year I received an arc for the third book in the series, so I figure I should at least try the first book to see if I’d like to continue. So far, I am enjoying it! I didn’t really know much about this series (other than it’s alternate history, and that I like the covers), so I was happy to find out that it’s a story of Vlad III (Vlad the Impaler) and his brother Radu, except… in this version, Vlad is a girl, and named Lada.

I was voicing my worries to Kevin about what happens next in this series because I like Lada and don’t want her to be, you know, Vlad the Impaler. But I’m also enjoying it too much to care?

What did you recently finish reading?

This morning, I finished The Victoria in My Head by Janelle Milanes. I really loved this book and found it difficult to put down, but I also have to admit that a lot of it is because I am very biased towards contemporary fiction related to music, especially when the characters are musicians and/or obsessed with music. In this book, Victoria Cruz lived what she considered a boring, predictable life until she auditioned to sing in a band. The chapter titles are all songs which makes up an awesome playlist (I’m also biased here, because it includes my favourite songs, especially the Sleater-Kinney and Pixies).

What do you think you’ll read next?

Hmm… I may start on Now I Rise, the continuation to And I Darken. Or one of the sequels to books that I’ve read last year. Or I may pick up the Tahereh Mafi that I temporarily put down (in order to finish my other books more quickly). Or Tower of Dawn, so that I can immediately start on Kingdom of Ash when it’s out. We shall see.
