Wrap-Up: #AsianLitBingo

We’ve come to the end of #AsianLitBingo! Well, technically, by the time this post goes up the challenge would’ve ended yesterday. I started out okay, but around the third week of May I was struggling because (1) we were crazy busy at work, and (2) I had a bad flu, and most days I couldn’t read. I ended up listening to audiobooks a lot, but I didn’t have any that fit the challenge, so I listened to the entire Raven Cycle. Again. Continue reading “Wrap-Up: #AsianLitBingo”

The #AsianLitBingo Challenge

I haven’t joined a reading challenge in AGES, and this is the first to get me excited in awhile – #AsianLitBingo. It is hosted by a group of bloggers, but the main post can be found here. I’m happy to be diving into Asian Lit again (reading Misa Sugiura last month made me realise how much I miss it, although now I’m sad I didn’t wait til this month to read it!) but to tell the truth, I’m as excited by the bingo part. It reminds me of the fanfic bingo challenges I used to do, I guess. The thing is, May is going to be a super busy month for me at work, so I’m not sure I’ll be able to complete my bingo. I’ll still try my best! Continue reading “The #AsianLitBingo Challenge”

r.eaders i.mbibing p.eril xi (wrap-up) + other updates

ripeleven400Oct 6th:

It’s already the 6th and I just realised, it’s SEPTEMBER. Which means… it’s time for R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril. Stainless Steel Droppings‘ reading events are my favourites to participate in, although lately (the last few years?) I keep missing out for various reasons. Sometimes I’d be just too plain busy. Other times I’d have completely forgotten until it’s too late. Thankfully, I remembered this one. Back in the day, I would usually go for Peril the First, but this year, just in case I get busy (or end up playing too much PokeGo again >_<) I’m going with… PERIL THE SECOND. RIP III Challenge: Conclusion

I don’t think I’ll be able to get Lukyanenko’s The Last Watch by the 31st, so I’m ending this challenge. I’m supposed to read 4 books from my pool, and I read 5, so… I guess I did well 🙂

These are the books from my pool; I read all of them but the one by Lukyanenko –
Valiant, Holly Black
Last Watch, Sergei Lukyanenko
Heart-Shaped Box, Joe Hill
The Book of Lost Things, John Connolly
Dracula, Bram Stoker
Something Wicked This Way Comes, Ray Bradbury

I’ve been checking out other R.I.P. III reviews, and here are reviews of books I love, by others taking on the challenge:
-V-‘s review of Widdershins by Charles de Lint
Framed’s review of The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly
Nymeth’s review of The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

These are books I haven’t read, but wanted to after reading the reviews:
Carl V’s review of Out by Natsuo Kirino
Carl V’s review of The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter
Nymeth’s review of Nightmares and Fairy Tales by Serena Valentino

Something R.I.P.ing This Way Comes III (challenge)

I was just talking with Ichigo about doing book challenges, and wanted to do a couple at least, before the year ends. Next year I’m planning to challenge myself into reading at least 20 sci-fi books throughout the year (only 20 as I don’t want to give up on my other readings :p). Anyway, the R.I.P. challenge requires me to make a list of mystery/suspense/thriller/dark fantasy/gothic/horror/supernatural books to read throughout September and October. I’m taking the 1st Peril, which is to read 4 books in my list by the end of the challenge.
My books are:

Valiant, Holly Black
Last Watch, Sergei Lukyanenko
Heart-Shaped Box, Joe Hill
The Book of Lost Things, John Connolly
Dracula, Bram Stoker
Something Wicked This Way Comes, Ray Bradbury
So that makes 5 books in my pool. I added Dracula as a safety measure in case I don’t get a copy of Last Watch in time (it will be released in October). Plus, I haven’t read Dracula in one sitting before. So if I do choose it, that’ll be my challenge. To read it in one sitting. The rest are dark fantasy stuff that I’ve been planning to read, so now would be as good a time to start as any other.
Pity I didn’t expect to do a halloweeny challenge before this, as I’ve been swallowing vampire books non-stop since Breaking Dawn! (Day Watch, Twilight Watch, I’m on Sunshine now… and my friend just offered to lend me her first Vampire Academy book…)

29/08 – I’m adding Ray Bradbury’s “Something Wicked This Way Comes” to my pool. Because “Fahrenheit 451” is one of my favorite books and Jen tells me I HAVE to read “Something Wicked This Way Comes.”
